This one came out during a particularly grim January, and I genuinely think it saved my sanity.

You know those afternoons when it’s dark by half three, the garden’s muddy, and the kids are climbing the walls? I needed something that would actually grip them — not just occupy them while I had a cuppa. This treasure hunt has a proper villain (Frost King Olaf), a real mission (breaking his spell), and enough magic built into the story that even our cynical eight-year-old got into it.

The setup: An evil frost has frozen the whole world. Flowers won’t bloom, birds won’t sing, and a magical crystal has shattered into six pieces. Frost King Olaf is keeping spring locked away. Your kids are the only ones brave enough to journey through his frozen realm, face his challenges, and collect all six frost splinters to restore the crystal and free spring.

Before they start, they do a warm-up ritual: each child decorates their own winter biscuit, which somehow makes them feel more “ready” for the mission. It sounds odd, but honestly, it works.

Hannah’s honest tip: There’s a station that involves building a “frost spell” (basically a physical challenge). Make sure you’ve got space. Also, some kids find the Frost King a tiny bit scary at first — nothing nightmare-inducing, but if your lot are sensitive, just soften his character when you read the story. He’s not actually evil, just mischievous.

When does this hunt work best?

This is my go-to for the strange days between Boxing Day and the return to school, and for those dark January weekends when everyone’s going stir-crazy. There’s no Father Christmas in it, so it works any time from December to the end of February — indoors, or in the garden if it’s dry. Give yourself about half an hour to print, cut and hide the stations.

Quick answer: a printable winter treasure hunt for ages 4–9 and 2–10 players, with 60–120 minutes of play. Instant PDF — print it at home tonight.

The treasure hunt is incredibly lovingly and really sweetly designed. Just the thing for cold days when you'd rather stay indoors. The children were calm, focused and absolutely thrilled.

We played the treasure hunt entirely indoors because it was freezing outside. The ice-cube blowing in particular caused lots of laughter. Simple idea, big impact.

Perfect for the dark time of year. We set everything up in the living room and the winter magic was ready. One star off only because the children would have loved to keep playing.
