We saved this winter forest treasure hunt for the first proper snow day of the year — wellies on, flask of hot chocolate packed — and it turned a freezing Saturday into the best afternoon of the holidays.

The story is a gentle heart-warmer: overnight snow has buried the whole forest, and Fox Felix — the only animal still out and about — hears a tiny, shivering peep. At the end of a trail of tracks he finds a little swallow who overslept when her family flew south for the winter. Now she’s alone in the cold, and Felix needs a team of brave winter helpers to get her safely through the season and find her a warm winter nest. There’s a treasure chest waiting at the end, obviously.

Along the way the kids read animal tracks in the snow, sort out who hibernates and who stays awake, find the snowflake twins in a flurry, guide a hungry bird through the maze to the feeder, solve the wise owl’s riddle (a picture puzzle for little ones, a proper KenKen for older kids), let off steam at the Keeping Warm movement station with a round of Frost Tag, crack the secret winter words code, and finish with a word search that reveals what makes a safe winter nest.

Every station comes in two difficulty levels (4–6 and 6–9), so siblings can play together without anyone getting mardy. The pack includes the read-aloud story, a treasure map with reward stickers, a “gathering winter powers” warm-up, invitations, Brave Winter Helper certificates, bonus games and a cheat sheet — and set-up is a genuinely quick 10–15 minutes.

Hannah’s honest tip: if you’re playing outside in the snow, pop the station cards in freezer bags to keep them dry — soggy clue cards are heartbreak. No snow? It works just as well indoors; the story does the wintering for you.
