- A murder mystery night at home needs three things: a printable murder mystery game, a table for the evidence, and 90–120 minutes.
- There are two styles: character games, where every guest plays a scripted suspect, and detective games, where everyone investigates the evidence together. Detective games are easier to host and work with any number of players.
- Our printable kit is a detective game for 2–10 players aged 15+: nine suspects, evidence cards, codes and a full solution. Set-up takes 10–15 minutes.
- It works for a dinner party, a games night, New Year’s Eve, the days between Christmas and New Year — or a date night for two.

Two Kinds of Murder Mystery Game
Before you buy anything, it helps to know there are two very different styles of murder mystery game:
| Character (role-play) game | Detective (investigation) game | |
|---|---|---|
| How it works | Every guest is given a suspect to play, with a script and secrets | Everyone plays a detective and works through the evidence together |
| Players | A fixed number — one per character | Flexible — two players or a whole table |
| Best for | Confident groups who love dressing up and acting | Mixed groups, quieter friends, puzzle lovers, families with teens |
| Host effort | Send character packs in advance, manage the rounds | Lay out the evidence and read the case file |
Our printable murder mystery party kit is the second kind: a full case file, nine suspect profiles, evidence cards, logic puzzles and code-breaking. Nobody has to act if they don’t want to — though somebody always does.
How to Host a Murder Mystery Night at Home
- Pick your game and your guests. Check the player numbers and age range — our kit suits 2–10 players aged 15 and up.
- Send the invitations a week ahead. A little teaser (“Professor Raven requests your presence…”) and an optional dress code — 1920s, black tie, lab coats.
- Print and set up (10–15 minutes). Print on ordinary A4, then lay the evidence out on a separate table or tray, grouped by type. If it’s scattered, people forget what they’ve already checked.
- Set the scene. Low lights, candles (battery ones near paper), a playlist, and the case file ready to read aloud.
- Play in teams of 2–4. Give each team a suspects checklist so they can track their own theory.
- Call time and accuse. Each team names its suspect and explains why. Then read the solution — expect groans.

Planning a Murder Mystery Dinner Party
A murder mystery dinner party is the classic way to play. A simple timeline that works:
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 7:00 | Guests arrive, drinks, read the opening of the case file |
| 7:20 | Starter, first look at the suspects and the evidence |
| 8:00 | Main course — teams compare notes and argue |
| 8:45 | Puzzles and codes on the evidence table |
| 9:20 | Pudding, final accusations, the solution |
Keep the food easy — a one-pot main or a buffet — so the host can play too. Our kit runs 90–120 minutes, which fits neatly around three courses.
A Christmas Murder Mystery
The strange days between Christmas and New Year are made for a murder mystery: the family’s all together, nobody wants another film, and the teenagers are finally off their phones. Play it after Boxing Day lunch, or make it the main event of a New Year’s Eve party. Mixed teams of grown-ups and teens work brilliantly — the teens usually crack the codes first.
Need something for the younger ones too? Our Christmas party games for kids and the Christmas scavenger hunt keep them busy while the grown-ups investigate.
Murder Mystery Date Night for Two
Detective games work with just two players, which makes them a lovely date night at home: a bottle of something, a takeaway, and a case to crack together. Play as a team against the clock, or as rival detectives who each name a suspect before the reveal.
Murder Mysteries for Teens and Kids
Our murder mystery kit is aimed at ages 15 and up. For younger detectives, try a child-friendly case instead: the Detective Treasure Hunt (ages 6–12) swaps the murder for a stolen crown, and Circus Detectives (ages 6–12) has nine suspects and a saboteur to unmask. Our guide to a murder mystery party for kids has more ideas, and the escape room for kids at home page covers the puzzle-room alternative.
- Scattered evidence: Fix: one table, grouped by type, and a checklist per team.
- The host can’t play: Fix: easy food and a detective-style game the host can join.
- Too many players per team: Fix: teams of 2–4 so everyone handles the clues.
- Revealing too early: Fix: everyone must make an accusation before the solution is read.
