Ages 4–6

Picture and rebus clues, patterns and a seek-and-find challenge. A grown-up reads the story and helps with the puzzles.

Ages 6–9

Decode symbols, search for words and tackle number and logic puzzles, with a grown-up guiding the adventure.

Ages 9–12

A Caesar cipher wheel, a number pyramid and caravan logic add more challenge for older explorers.

Plan the space

Choose hiding places indoors, in the garden or at a suitable park. Leave room for a short balancing route with a start and finish.

Allow around 30 minutes to prepare, plus printing time. A grown-up reads the story and guides the group during play.

Lily went absolutely mad for this one, despite being convinced she’d already “done” Ancient Egypt at school.

We were lashing it down outside, and I needed something that felt different from the usual treasure hunt. So I dug out this Egyptian adventure: the kids aren’t just following clues, they’re stepping into the world of the pharaohs, guided by the wise priest Khenti, to recover fragments of the lost wisdom of Amun-Ra.

You print it at home, hide clues around the house or garden, and the children work through eight stations filled with hieroglyphic puzzles, labyrinth riddles, and mysteries inspired by actual Egyptian mythology. Each solved puzzle adds another piece to their treasure map—and by the end, they’ve pieced together the whole ancient secret.

Best for: ages 4–12, indoors or outdoors, 2–12 junior Egyptologists. Plan for 60–120 minutes depending on how slowly they want to work through the mythology and riddles. Honestly, this one scales beautifully—the younger kids enjoy the simpler puzzles and the story, whilst the older ones get properly stuck into the more complex codes.

Hannah’s honest tip: if the kids are struggling with the hieroglyphic puzzles, don’t jump in straight away. Let them sit with the frustration for a bit—there’s actual learning happening. But do have a backup sheet of “hints” ready if one child’s completely stuck and the others are mardy. And honestly? A little golden or bronze face paint or a paper headdress makes everyone feel properly transported.

When does this hunt work best?

A rainy weekend or a school-holiday afternoon, especially when Ancient Egypt has come up at school — and it’s a natural fit for an Egyptian-themed birthday party.
