Spring in the Forest

We ran this one in the woods behind Nan’s house over the holidays, and Oscar still checks every pond we pass “for tadpoles that need help”.

The forest has overslept. Deep among the trees everything is still grey and quiet — no birdsong, no blossom, no buzzing — and Felix the Fox needs a team of helpers to wake it up and bring spring back. That’s the job your kids take on in this spring treasure hunt: station by station they return life to the forest, sticking a badge onto their treasure map for every task they complete.

The eight stations are a proper little nature lesson smuggled inside a game: guiding the migrating birds back to their nests through a maze, waking the early bloomers — snowdrop, crocus, daffodil and friends — with colouring for the little ones and flowering-order clues for older kids, sorting the frog’s life cycle from frogspawn to tadpole to frog, a sharp-eyed search for the picture that appears twice (older kids get a Gokigen logic puzzle instead), the Spring Sowing number puzzles, the First Bees pollen-carrying game (the running-about station — bless), the Honeycomb Puzzle, and a final secret message to decipher on the way to the treasure.
